What is the meaning of life?

When thinking about deep things, we often hear the question posed “What is the meaning of life?”.

As a good Christian, we know to look to the Bible for the answer – just as we should.

Strangely enough, you can find the answer in the secular world as well, but in an unlikely, yet completely obvious place.

According to the book The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the answer given to the question as posed by one of the characters “[What is the] Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything”, is simply “42”.

For years, when asked why he chose that number, Douglas Adams never really said. Finally, on November 3rd, 1993, he gave an answer.

” The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought ’42 will do’ I typed it out. End of story. “

In reading the Bible and with this information floating around somewhere in the back of my mind, I came to an exciting epiphany; that answer is actually the honest truth and moreover, is correct.

In Matthew 1:1-17, the lineage of Jesus is written out, showing the path from Abraham to Jesus. At the end of the ‘begats’ in verse 16, we find that all the generations leading up to Jesus total … yep, 42.

So, now when we ask ourselves or hear “What is the meaning of life?”

42 … Jesus, the Christ.

God bless.
