Same-sex marriage is a topic of great debate, especially now that the United States Supreme has agreed to way in on the constitutionality of state laws that ban such marriages. When the owner of Chick-fil-A stated that it was his opinion that same-sex marriage was unbiblical, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel promised to do everything within his power to prevent the restaurant chain from opening any more stores within the city limits. Just this past week the CEO of Starbucks told a stock holder that if he stood against same-sex marriage that he should sell his shares and invest in another company. Gay right’s activists have proven that they will discriminate against anyone who will not sanction homosexuality or same-sex marriage.
This issue also appears to be the defining subject to determine who will stand up for the Bible or come against it. Former Mars Hill Church Pastor, Rob Bell, stated that “I believe God [is] pulling us ahead into greater and greater affirmation and acceptance of our gay brothers and sisters and pastors and friends and neighbors and coworkers”. He went onto say that “I am for fidelity. I am for love, whether it’s a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, a man and a man. I think the ship has sailed and I think that the church needs to just … this is the world that we are living in and we need to affirm people wherever they are”. A United Methodist Church in North Carolina has voted to stop all weddings until laws that prevent same-sex marriage are overturned.
From time to time, people will ask me “what does the Bible have to say about same-sex marriage?” To be honest, the Bible says nothing about same-sex marriage. It simply was not an issue as there is no evidence that any ancient society has ever accepted same-sex marriage. The best we can derive from the Bible about same sex marriages is by seeing how the Bible speaks about homosexuality.
Leviticus 18:22 states “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” This scripture is rather clear. There is no room for personal interpretation. In fact, this statement describes homosexuality an abomination. It means “a disgusting thing or wickedness.” The Old Testament is clear that homosexuality is a serious sin.
Homosexuals need to understand that God is singling out their sin. In fact, the sin of sodomy is part of a list of twenty other sexual relationships that are forbidden. Others include adultery, incest and bestiality.
Although scripture does not address directly the issue of same-sex marriage, it does about marriage.
Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Matthew 19:4-6 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
The Bible teaches that marriage is between male and female. There is no point in trying to get the Bible to sanction same sex marriages. It doesn’t.
Not only does the Bible forbid same-sex marriage, but nature prohibits it also. The concept is against the very laws of nature. Allowing same sex marriages will devalue real marriages, open a Pandora box of other issues such as polygamy, incest marriages, child marriages, and even marriages between men and animals.
Anytime someone uses the Bible to stand against such wickedness, someone will eventually claim that we are spreading hate rather than preaching love. They will claim that God is a God of love and that we need to be more like him. How do they know God is a God of love? By the Bible of course, the very Bible that teaches the sinfulness of homosexuality.
As Pastor of the First Missionary Baptist Church of St Helens, Oregon, I want it to go on record that we will stand against any redefining of marriage. Marriage in the eyes of God has always been, and will continue to be, one man for one woman for one lifetime. No matter what the Supreme Court decides, Same-sex marriage is an abomination in they eyes of God. The decision of the Court is not final, the decision of the Word of God is final.
Psalm 119:89 “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in Heaven.” God has said that homosexuality is an abomination and the issue is for ever settled in the eyes of God. May we strive to be pleasing to him rather than pleasing to man.
