Will same-sex “marriage” be the demise of marriage in America?
As we await the Supreme Courts ruling on the issue of same-sex marriage, I am troubled by the current condition of marriage in America. To be more specific, I am more concerned about the condition of marriage in Christian-America. What has happened to marriage in America?
While Christians protest same-sex marriage, divorce is at an all-time high among professing Christians. On an almost weekly basis I am told of another professing Christian man or woman caught in adultery. Just this past month, the Pastor of the largest independent Baptist Church in America was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his relationship with a 16-year-old church member. Will same-sex “marriages” really be the demise of marriage in America?
A young couple is introduced to each other for the first time at a church outing. Two weeks later they walk into a county courthouse and are married. Do they not realize the seriousness of marriage? A Pastor and his wife separate, divorce, and are both remarried within a year. Another preacher kicks his wife out of the house, moves in with a young lady from the same church, and has a child with this lady while still married to his wife? Will same-sex “marriages” really be the demise of marriage in America?
A pastor’s wife leaves her husband and kids behind in order to “move on with her life”. Another wife of a pastor has an affair with a man in the Church and goes right on speaking at Christian Women’s conferences without even hesitating. A pastor is arrested, charged with sexual misconduct, and the following week his church gives him a standing ovation as he rises to preach. Will same-sex “marriages” really be the demise of marriage in America?
A Sunday School teacher stands before his class and teaches a lesson on holiness, only to go home to an adulterous relationship while his wife and children weep his absence. A Christian man admits that after 20 years of marriage he has been caught in an affair and although he knows the affair is wrong, plans on continuing the affair “for the time being”. A youth Pastor is caught having sexual relations with a young lady in his youth group. One month later He walks down the aisle and marries his wife, by the way, not the same young lady that only a month ago he was sleeping with. Will same-sex “marriages” really be the demise of marriage in America?
These scenarios are not generic statements. As I write this, I can place a name and face with every one of them. These statements are not based on rumors but on verifiable situations. Why did I list these?
While we as Christians are busy protesting same-sex marriages, the marriages within the realm of Christianity are crumbling. While I agree that same-sex marriages will have a tremendous effect on all marriages in America, I do not believe the demise of marriage in America can be blamed on them. I think it is time that we as Christians get honest. It is time that we realize: For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? – 1 Peter4:17
