Ah, pennies from Heaven. So often, we limit God with our finite imaginations. God doesn’t say anything about pennies in the Bible.
In fact, God promises that if we give to Him, we won’t be able to receive the blessing he’ll pour out on us. This is the sort of rain this sun-loving woman can look forward to with anticipation.
“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, an prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (Mal. 3:10)
As a child, I was fascinated by this verse. I would give my offering and walk outside, staring up into heaven. Isn’t that just like a child? Taking the Bible literally, expecting God’s blessing to come down from the “windows of heaven.”
Our faith is limited; thus, God’s blessings on us are limited. We can tie the hands of Almighty God just because we don’t accept his words at face value.
How to Claim this Blessing
- Bring your tithes. I know some people want to claim that giving God ten percent of all our increase is an Old Testament principle. So true. My experience is that New Testament expectations exceed the written precepts of the law. That might mean we should be giving more that one-tenth.
“Give, and it shall be given unto you” (Luke 6:38) Jesus told the multitude. In fact, he said the more we give, the more others will give to us. This seems like a pretty fair investment to me.
- God’s house needs to be provided for. The church runs on the generosity of its members. Jesus bought her with his blood, the least we can do is make sure the building where she meets is worthy of such a price.
This reminds me of the message of Haggai the prophet. The Israelites focused on making their lives more comfortable while the temple lay in ruins. God told them “he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes” (Hag 1:6).
Talk about throwing money away! We can put God first and He will take care of the rest. Or we can keep our money and watch it be washed down the drain. Is there really a choice?
Blessings from Heaven
If this sounds like the only way I think god will bless us is with money, that isn’t my intention. We can’t imagine the ways he might choose to bless us. If we hold up our end of this bargain, we can leave the method of pouring out a blessing to Him.
God wants to bless us. He owns all of heaven and earth, so he has the means with which to bless us. Are we ready to receive such enormous blessings?
